Keep learning about how to improve your driving with Fire Laps

General questions

What is Fire Laps, in simple terms?

Fire Laps is a cloud-based lap analysis and coaching platform designed for drivers and teams. It turns raw motorsports telemetry data into visual insights and personalized feedback, so you can get faster, faster.

Do I need a Fire Link to use Fire Laps?

No, you can manually upload data from compatible devices like AiM and APEX Pro. However, the Fire Link enables real-time uploads and unlocks features like live streaming and fully automated uploads and analysis.

Is Fire Laps compatible with motorcycles or karting?

Yes, Fire Laps supports multiple vehicle types, including cars, motorcycles, and karts. The Fire Laps interface will even slightly adjust for motorcycles, for example, showing lean angle instead of lateral Gs. The Fire Link hardware is compact and mounts easily in most vehicles.

Comparing Fire Laps with alternatives

Why should I use the Fire Link instead of uploading data from my AiM device?

The Fire Link gives you real-time wireless uploads and automatic syncing to your Fire Laps account, so there's no need to manually connect to your AiM device or pull files using Race Studio. Your data is available on your phone or computer by the time you're back in the paddock, giving you more time to learn and less time managing cables and files.

How does Fire Laps + the Fire Link compare to the Garmin Catalyst?

While both provide lap timing, performance analysis, and coaching insights, the Intelligent Lap Coach uses state-of-the-art AI algorithms to give you plain-English insights and personalized recommendations based on your driving and the driving of others, helping you improve faster. Fire Laps also makes it easy to share your data with coaches, friends, or teammates, and learn from them. Fire Laps is designed to support drivers and teams at every skill level, whether you're chasing tenths or just getting started.

How does Fire Laps + the Fire Link compare to the APEX Pro?

While the Fire Link doesn't assist you in real time during a session, it streams your precise telemetry to the cloud for deep analysis of every turn and straight. The Intelligent Lap Coach then breaks down acceleration zones, braking points, and racing lines to give you actionable tips for your next session. Even without a Fire Link, Fire Laps is compatible with APEX Pro, since you can upload and analyze apexSession files using our intuitive interface.

How do I connect my Fire Link to my vehicle?

To set up your Fire Link, you'll need to connect it to power, affix the antenna onto your vehicle, connect the antenna to the Fire Link, and link the Fire Link to your Fire Laps account. You can find more details in our Fire Link instruction manual.

My vehicle is on but my Fire Link doesn't show any lights, why is that?

If you are in the sun, the lights on the Fire Link may be difficult to see, so shade your device and verify the lights are indeed off. Then, double-check your power connection to ensure it is connected properly and powered with between 3V and 16V. If the lights remain off, contact Fire Laps for more assistance.

Why do the Startup or Live lights appear immediately after I power on my Fire Link and disappear a few seconds later?

These lights may appear as a residual from the last time your Fire Link was booted up. As your Fire Link continues to start up, the lights will disappear and begin flashing in accordance with the normal startup process.

My Fire Link has been on for a while but the Startup light is still flashing, what should I do?

There are a few potential causes for this. A normal boot sequence takes about one minute, and if you're in a new location, the Fire Link may take longer to acquire GPS and cell signals, so it's best to start it up several minutes before going on track.

If the issue persists, first, verify that your antenna is attached correctly. If the Live light is flashing rapidly, it means it already has a GPS signal, suggesting the antenna is fine. Second, ensure that there is cell signal nearby, as Fire Links need cellular service to transmit their data. Third, verify that your device is not being underpowered. Underpowered devices may appear to start up successfully but may not have enough power to connect to cellular networks and begin streaming.

The Startup light is solid but the Live light is still flashing, what should I do?

If the Startup light is solid, your Fire Link has connected to the cellular network. If the Live LED is flashing slowly, it's waiting for a GPS signal and should connect soon if the antenna has a clear view of the sky. If the Live light is flashing rapidly for several minutes, your device may not be linked to your Fire Laps account or your membership may have lapsed. Scan the QR code on the device to check.

What happens if my Fire Link's Startup light never became solid during my race?

If the Live light was flashing quickly, that means your Fire Link still had a GPS connection, and your Fire Link was running in Offline mode, with your data being safely saved onto the Fire Link's storage. Next time it connects, the Fire Link will transmit that whole session to Fire Laps for analysis.

Why can't my friends see my live stream?

Fire Laps prioritizes your privacy, so your location on track will only be visible if you nearby a track already in the Fire Laps database, and you've elected to share your live stream with other users (a setting disabled by default). Log into your Fire Laps account and adjust your Fire Laps Live settings to show your live stream to other logged-in users.

I'm at a track not yet in the Fire Laps database, will my Fire Link still work?

Yes, it will! Even though your live stream will be disabled, Fire Laps will still process your data, and if it detects you driving in a loop formation, it will create a new track and let you analyze your data after the race. If you create a new track by accident, contact Fire Laps to have the track removed from the database.

Bringing your own device to Fire Laps

How do I sync my AiM device with Fire Laps?

Newer AiM Sports WiFi-compatible device users can take advantage of Spark, our Windows-based lap downloader app. Older AiM devices without WiFi are still compatible, but require data to be exported or downloaded to your computer first before uploading the Fire Laps for analysis.

If I use an AiM, why should I use Fire Laps when I can just view data in the AiM Race Studio software?

Fire Laps makes data analysis fast and intuitive. Race Studio gives you full access to your data, but Fire Laps uses AI to highlight the most valuable insights visually and lets you compare with other drivers, including non-AiM users, so you know exactly how to improve.

Do I need an internet connection to upload my data into Fire Laps?

Yes, our cloud-based analysis and coaching requires files to be uploaded. If your current race track doesn't have WiFi, a cell phone hotspot can almost always do the job.

How accurate is Fire Laps data?

Fire Laps filters and accurately displays the gathered GPS data, but cannot account for all data collection errors. You can improve the quality of your GPS data by mounting your device in a location with minimal obstructions.

Data sharing and event administration

When I upload my sessions, can I upload anonymously?

Yes! When uploading your sessions to Fire Laps, you have the option to adjust your privacy settings during the upload process, including having your session be completely anonymous. This allows you to control who can view your name attached to your data. However, even if anonymous, the data from all sessions will be visible to other users. If you're a part of an event, your event organizers may also see your name attached to the session to aid in event administration.

Can I compare data with other drivers?

Yes. Fire Laps lets you compare your laps with teammates, friends, or top performers at your track, all while respecting privacy settings. On tracks with plenty of data, Fire Laps may also highlight laps from other drivers in similar vehicles, based on acceleration and cornering performance, to give you new ideas and benchmarks for your next session.

Can our racing organization use Fire Laps to make sure racers are in compliance with the rules?

Fire Laps makes it easy to compare data between racers. Our tools let event organizers analyze sessions side by side, flag anomalies, take notes, and publish leaderboards. More features are in development, so contact us to learn more or request specific tools for your events.
